What is changing within .CN?
Under recently announced policy, .CN domain names will be available for registration worldwide. Previously, only registrants located in China were able to register a .CN name. CNNIC is also moving to an EPP-based real-time registration system. CNNIC has also announced a new competitive registrar model. Previously, .CN sales agents accepted .CN registrations, but CNNIC acted as the exclusive Registrar and Registry.

Can Registrars market .CN names to registrants located in China?
Yes. Registrars and resellers of .CN domain names are able to offer .CN domain names to registrants worldwide.

You say there are "no policy restrictions" on .CN names. What does that mean, exactly?
After launch, any business or organization, worldwide, can register a .CN name under a new liberalized policy that no longer restricts .CN registrations to Chinese entities.

Does a company or organization need a subsidiary in China in order to acquire a .CN name?
No.

5) Has CNNIC reserved any names in the second level of .CN?
The CNNIC Registry has reserved certain names. These include:
  • Country names, three-letter and ISO3166
  • Chinese Government organizations and leaders' names
  • Names that are for National Security
  • Province and City names
  • Special telephone numbers. (001), etc.
  • All gTLD's and some second-level spaces (biz.cn, kids.cn)
  • Certain famous trademarks (about 350)
  • Names labeled by the UN to promote world culture, heritage.
  • Chinese Universities and Colleges
  • News Media as approved by the National News Office

What are the rules governing intellectual property (IP) disputes in the .CN domain?

What options do trademark owners have to protect their IP rights in .CN?
Users may elect to utilize the Chinese Dispute Resolution Process to resolve disputes through CNNIC-designated arbitration providers. This process is very similar to the UDRP arbitration process. Of course, as is the case in all TLD disputes, users may also elect to pursue resolution in the courts.

Yes, .CN is avialable for registration worldwide, but only legally registered entities are eligible for it, individuals can not register .CN.

.CN will be available for registration formally on 03-17-2003.

Is .CN registration based on the rule of "first come, first reserve"?
Yes. So, you'd better register .CN as soon as possible by asking for help via sales@webnic.cc

What if there are several applicants for the same .CN?
Actually, there may be several eligible .COM.CN holders like "abc.com.cn", "abc.net.cn" and "abc.org.cn" applying for "abc.cn". Since .CN registration is based on the rule of "first come, first reserve". CNNIC will issue "abt.cn" to the first applicant.

What term lengths are available?
Initially, NeuLevel will make .CN domain names available to registrars for term lengths between one (1) and five (5) years.

Can I make modifications to an application or to a successfully registered domain?
While you cannot currently modify domain applications or successful registrations, modifications will be available in approximately thirty days. Updates and details will be provided when available.

How do I modify the contact data or nameservers?
While you cannot currently modify domain applications or successful registrations, modifications will be available in approximately thirty days. Updates and details will be provided when available.

Can I resell .cn domains to my customers?
Yes, just like other domain extensions, you can resell domains to your clients.

I accidentally registered a .cn domain can I delete it?
Yes, you can delete a .CN domain but because registrations will be processed in real time no money will be refunded.

What are the rules for deletions?
Only a sponsoring registrar can initiate the deletion of a .CN domain name. If the deletion initiated within the 15-day add grace period, the name will be immediately made available for registration. If a deletion is initiated after the 15-day add grace period, the name will be put on a five-day "Pending Delete" status. If a domain name registration expires, the name will be put on a 15-day "Pending Delete" status. All non-expired domain names have a five-day "Pending Delete" status.

What happens when a domain name expires?
When a domain name expires, it is immediately placed on HOLD and taken out of the zone files.

If a domain name is in the 15-day pending delete period, can it be restored?
Yes. Sponsoring Registrars can restore domain names during the 15-day pending delete period.

How and when will I know if my .cn applications were successful?
Once applications are submitted, you will receive status emails regarding any applications that you have submitted.

When will I be charged for a successful registration?
When applications are submitted , the credit card that is on file in your account will be charged automatically.

How soon is WHOIS information updated?
Because .CN domains are processed through the Registry, updates are processed within the same day.

What are the rules for renewals?
Registrars can renew domain names through the "Renewal" command. There is no auto-renewal operation in .CN; thus, there is no auto-renewal grace period.

What are the rules for Registrar transfers?
Registrar transfers in .CN will only be allowed for non-China-based Registrars connecting through Registry's gateway. Domain names registered through China-based registrars cannot be transferred into non-China based registrars, and vice versa.

Domain names cannot be transferred within the first 60 days of initial registration. Also, domain names scheduled to expire in fewer than 14 days will not be allowed to transfer. These rules are based on the fact that .CN does not have auto-renewal for expired names.
